How surprising! Cocoa extracts and antioxidant compounds called procyanidins in cocoa can reduce the body’s ability to absorb fats and carbohydrates. In laboratory studies scientists in the US looked at the effects of Lavado, regular, and Dutch-processed cocoa extracts as well as cocoa procyanidins. They found that Lavado was the most effective in inhibiting the activity of three important digestive enzymes involved in absorption of fats. Before you rush off to gorge on chocolate take note that this was done in test tubes and that the researchers state that cocoa extracts and antioxidant compounds may play a role in body weight management in conjunction with a low-calorie diet.
